It took a while to get everything straightened out this morning. Insurance was a bitch to deal with, as usual, but the adjustor came out a couple of hours after I called, and as I figured would happen, my truck was totaled out. Then, the company I’d been hauling for asked me to stay with the load until the next driver showed up. And the new driver took his sweet fucking time getting there.

And then he wanted to talk my ear off about the storm like I really wanted to relive the shit Fletcher and I had gone through last night. I’d shut that shit down fast, wished him luck on the road, and then called an Uber. I didn’t know how they planned to get everything out of that trailer, and I didn’t care. It wasn’t my fucking problem anymore, and I didn’t want Fletcher on that lot any longer than he had to be.

He was traumatized enough. Seeing all of the destruction in broad daylight, the sun shining down on it all like everything was all fine and dandy, definitely only made it worse.

“Where are we going now?” Fletcher asked as we stood at the edge of the truck stop driveway, waiting on the Uber I’d ordered.

“To a rental car spot. Need a car to get home.”

He frowned at me. “No work?”

I chuckled, shaking my head. “Nah, babe. Not right now. I’m an owner-operator, so I’ve got to wait for my insurance check to come in from the insurance company and then go finance a new truck. So, I get a few days off.” I combed my fingers through his hair, loving the way he stepped closer to me and leaned into my touch every time I did so. “What do you say to spending a few days at home with me?”

He shrugged. “I don’t care.” He looked up at me. “I haven’t talked to Dad about any of this. The tornado and the damage…”

I sighed. I knew his dad was a sensitive topic, and I knew he was worried about Tyler’s reaction. But Fletcher was also brave for going after what he wanted.

“Don’t worry about any of that right now. Your dad texted me this morning, and I told him everything was fine. I don’t want him adding stress to either of our plates right now. You’re safe and alive, and I’m taking care of you. That’s all he needs to know.” I pressed a kiss to his temple. “So, right now, we just focus on getting home. Once we’re at home and we’ve had a good night’s rest, we’ll deal with Tyler.”

“Okay,” he breathed, his shoulders relaxing. “I can do that.”

I grabbed his hand in mine and laced our fingers together just as the Uber pulled to the curb.

Fletcher’s trust in me was something I would never take for granted. And I would do my damnest to make sure he believed in me to take care of everything for the rest of our lives.
